Hog Island Campground
Afternoon of 8/13 to Morning of 8/14 2022
On a camping trip with friends in August 2022, we stayed at a hidden gem off Highway 2 in the UP. Hog Island would make a perfect waypoint on any grand UP adventure. It’s location makes it a perfect stopping point, while the campsite itself feels like a main attraction being so close to the lakeshore.
Rustic sites were first come first serve, and there were many to choose from as we drove around looking for a site on the lake. Our wooded campsite had a trail through brush and grass leading to the rocky shore.
On the way up there were tons of tourist stations boasting homemade pasties and whitefish. Highway 2 was as scenic as ever with views of the dunes and Lake Michigan to the left.
We started a fire that night, admired the wildflowers, played uno, and went for a freezing swim under the moon. The wind whipped at our tents as we slept to the sound of waves. In the morning, large flat rocks made the perfect perch to have coffee and look out at a pink sunrise.
